UN Global Road Safety Week (2021)

Globally, from the 17th to 23rd May 2021 is the 6th United Nations Global Road Safety Week, and Uganda joined the rest of the world in marking the event –to be celebrated under the theme ”Streets for Life #Love 30”. The theme of the 6th UN Global Road Safety Week in 2021 is 30km/hr on streets where people Walk, Live and Play.

There is strong evidence that maximum 30km/hr roads Save Lives, especially among Pedestrians, Cyclists, Children, and Young people, and have environmental and other social benefits.

On Sunday 23rd May, 2021, the Consortium (TEENS Uganda, Legacy Road Safety Initiative, Consult Afrika Usalama) with support from KCCA, Mo.WT, Red-cross, Stabex, Uganda Insurers Association, CiCSOT hosted a Safety Awareness Activity along the Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) Corridor of Namirembe Road. This NMT corridor was created to give safe space for the vulnerable road users that is pedestrians, cyclists and people with disabilities access down town Kampala. However, due to limited information to the general public it has been misused.

This activity targeted market vendors and boda boda riders in raising awareness on the proper use of the NMT corridor.

The National Accessibility Audit Team (NAAT) with support from UNAPD under took an accessibility audit on the network of the Non-motorized Corridor.
