Transforming Wetlands into WPF

TEENS Uganda is leading an inspiring initiative in Mabaale Village, Butaleja District, where it is restoring a degraded wetland previously used for unsustainable rice farming. Through community-led action, this wetland is being transformed into a water-for-production facility that supports simple irrigation systems, provides clean water for domestic use, and offers opportunities for fish farming. This integrated approach not only revives a vital ecosystem but also strengthens local livelihoods, boosts food security, and increases resilience against climate-related vulnerabilities.

The restored wetland is now a hub for sustainable resource use, empowering communities—especially youth and women—with practical skills in climate-smart agriculture, water management, and conservation. By turning environmental degradation into opportunity, TEENS Uganda is demonstrating how ecological restoration can go hand-in-hand with poverty reduction and climate adaptation.

This project represents a scalable model for environmental and economic transformation across Uganda and the region. However, more support is needed to expand its reach. TEENS Uganda is calling on donors, environmental enthusiasts, and development partners to invest in this vital work. With additional funding, the organization aims to train more youth and women in wetland restoration techniques, promote biodiversity conservation, and expand food production systems that are climate-resilient. Join us in restoring wetlands for a greener, more secure future for all.
